The Fantasy Trip (TFT) started as a set of games (originally "Melee" and "Wizard") developed by Metagaming in the late 1970's. TFT distinguished itself by being a fun, fast-playing representation of man-to-man combat with weapons and magic. It was only natural for it to develop into a complete gaming system.

In the early 1980's Metagaming fell on bad times and eventually went under. Unfortunately, Howard Thompson (who owned Metagaming) vanished, and with him, TFT.

TFT comprised these two games:

  • MELEE (1977) -- rules for man-to-man combat (Microgame #3)
  • WIZARD (1978) -- rules for magic use (Microgame #6)

TFT also included the following "microquests," which used the rules from Melee and Wizard:

  • DEATH TEST I (MicroQuest #1)
  • DEATH TEST II (MicroQuest #2)
  • GRAILQUEST (MicroQuest #3)
  • TREASURE OF THE SILVER DRAGON (MicroQuest #4)
  • SECURITY STATION (MicroQuest #5)
  • TREASURE OF THE UNICORN GOLD (MicroQuest #6)
  • MASTER OF THE AMULETS (MicroQuest #7)
  • ORBQUEST (MicroQuest #8)
